Description
You’ll discover a wide range of design elements inspired by traditional Asian mandalas. By the end of the class, you’ll have all the knowledge you need to continue drawing mandalas, making each one unique. I’ll give you tips on what equipment to use for drawing mandalas and you’ll have access to downloadable pdfs that form a library of symbols and design elements for ongoing inspiration.
What you’ll need
- Geometry compass
- Pencil
- Protractor
- 30 cm clear ruler (and ideally a shorter clear ruler too)
- Rubber/Eraser
- Thick white paper (for my classes A4 is perfect)
- Smudge-proof fineliner pen (not strictly necessary for my class but needed to complete the drawing)
I’d also recommend having either a cutting mat or an old magazine to hand to place under your paper when you are using the compass so that you don’t make a hole in your table or desktop.
What you’ll learn
- How to draw a mandala template
- How to draw an Asian inspired mandala (it’s a lot easier than it looks once you know a few simple techniques)
- Tips and tricks to make beautiful intricate designs (that are much easier to create than you’d imagine)
- A brief history of mandalas and how to use them as an aid to relaxation
By the end of the class
- You’ll be able to draw stunning, intricate mandalas
- You’ll have access to downloadable pdfs that form a library of symbols and design elements
- After the class, you may wish to colour your mandala using metallic pens, coloured pencils or paints

Really insightful, energising yet relaxing experience. Thank you for this incredible art workshop.

My partner and I have just finished the beginner class with Kathryn. So insightful, so meditative, so slow.. completely immersed, a real pleasure!
Kathryn distills her advice while letting us get into the depths of the mandala world.
Again, a real pleasure and willingness to continue!
Thanks Kathryn!
Kathryn Burrington –
I’m so pleased you enjoyed it and want to learn more. As well as the intermediate mandala class, I offer a monthly art club with a different theme each month including Arabic geometry, Celtic knotwork and, of course, mandala art, all suitable for beginners. From time to time I host one-off more in-depth classes covering the same topics. The dates for these will be in my newsletter so thank you for signing up for that. I look forward to seeing you both again. Enjoy creating many more mandalas!

I’ve just spent a wonderful morning with Kathryn at her beginners class. I loved it! Kathryn is full of information and very helpful. I learnt the basics and am now looking forward to continuing to play and learn more about this art. I would thoroughly recommend this course even if you think your not an artist, it’s very relaxing and fun.
Kathryn Burrington –
Thank you, Denise. It was a fun morning! I hope you get many hours of enjoyment drawing more mandalas. You did a fabulous job on this first one!

I was given a voucher for the Mandala Meadow Drawing for Beginners workshop as a Christmas Present and it was a really lovely thing to receive and attend. As someone who doesn’t often sit down to draw / be artistic, I found Kathryn’s approach really accessible and easy to follow. I particularly enjoyed the overview of the history and cultural context of mandalas – something I wasn’t expecting within the workshop but was really interesting. It was a really relaxing way to spend a Lockdown Saturday and I’m really pleased with the mandala I created. It would be a lovely thing to do with distant family and friends!

Thank you, Hebe. I’m so pleased you enjoyed it as well as finding it so interesting. Being able to teach online had been a godsend. And it’s fabulous that people from anywhere in the world can join in! I’ve had some wonderful groups of friends and family join my classes and I hope to continue long after lockdown.
